Meeting Joe and Shirin
I have enjoyed Joe Tilson’s work from his early Pop Art phase of the early sixties to the present when he is still working in his early nineties. Among a number of motifs in his work the Ziggurat or stepped pyramid has had a recurring presence. A Google search for ziggurats brought me to young Iranian artist Shirin Abedinirad. Her work includes exploring the same form in her large outdoor constructions with the additional components of mirrors and movement.
I think it is unlikely that Joe and Shirin have any knowledge of each other but it is interesting that two such widely separated artists can have such similar pre-occupations with a simple 3D form with such an ancient cultural history.
My time-based item in this project is made with the program P5js and consists of two variations or ‘iterations’ of the same code.
